2011 - 2012 Season

Teams Report - at Season's mid-point

At the halfway point of the season, in the North East Wales Leagues our three teams have had contrasting fortunes. The First Team performed extremely well and, as Champions, everyone wants to beat us. We finished a close second to Saints by 5 points, but enjoyed some quality matches throughout the season.

Meanwhile our Second Team, who are a strong squad, have under - performed and suffered relegation. This just shows the current strength of the North Wales First Division.

The Third Team have battled well but still relegated from Division 2 - they have been very unlucky this season with player non-availability and the odd result that went against them. They are probably too strong for Division 3 but let's wait and see !

STOP PRESS ! Three new teams have joined the North Wales Leagues for the second half of the season - so, the good news is that neither of the two Wrexham Brymbo Squash Club teams will now be relegated in January.

In the North West Counties Squash League Division 3, our Team is going great guns, winning all 11 matches and sitting proudly on the top of the Division. Unfortunately, however, we are only 4 points ahead of the second placed side, local rivals Deeside ! All are looking forward to the second half but we cannot let our guard drop.

Overall and considering the size of our Club, we do well and box above our weight !
The Squash Club is always keen to hear from new players, including those from within the Club, to put themselves forward for teams matches. If any member knows of any players from outside the Club who would be interested in Teams squash then please let us know.

Our best wishes to Mitch Blythen who is leaving the area to start a new job. Mitch joined us from University at the begining of this season and featured regularly as part of our First Team in the North Wales Leagues.

On Sunday, 6th November 2011, Darren Lee and Hannah Davies (two members of our North Wales First Team) were invited to play in the New Brighton Squash Club 2011 Power Play Championships with Darren finishing in 3rd place and Hannah in 7th.
The format from this tournament formed the basis of our recent Christmas Tournament, "Fast & Furious" played on 17th December.

In third place ... Darren

Ladies Team bow out !

With some regret the Club will not field a team this season in the North West Counties Ladies Leagues.

Having survived the drop to remain in the League's First Division, there were insufficient players or strength in any depth to sustain the team and ensure we could honour our fixtures.

For us not to run a Ladies Team is a retrograde step for the Club, but one that we hope will be reversed in future.

Our Team in the North West Counties Squash Leagues had its first game of the 2011-12 Season on 29 September.

May 2011: North Wales Cup Final

Our North Wales First Team reached the Cup Final against Chester Rugby Club in Chester on 10th May and a dozen supporters from the Club urged on our Team - Darren Lee, Rob Evans, Hannah Davies, John Evans and Geraint Jones.

All games were keenly fought until there was a tie in the match at 2 - 2. This then brought on court the number one players - Darren Lee (Wrexham Brymbo) and fellow North Wales player, Rob Wilkins (Chester Rugby). Some tremendous squash pushed both players hard to 2 games each. However, in the fifth game, Rob's pace came through for a win to Chester Rugby. A superb end of season and congratulations to both sets of players.

May 2011: End of Season Report ...

North East Wales League Div 1 – Our 1st Team were champions in the first half (from September to December) and were runners-up in the second half of the season (January to April). This was an excellent, consistant team performance by all the players involved.

The 1st Team have also reached the NE Wales Cup Final against Chester Rugby Club on Tuesday, 10th May at Chester. See below for further details.

North East Wales League Div 2 – We had two teams playing in this league with our Junior side achieving promotion from Div 3 after finishing second in the first half the season. Congratulations also to the 2nd Team who had a great season - finishing second in the division and promotion to Division 1 next season.

The 2nd Team will find the step up extremely daunting as the standard from second to first division is very different. Lots of training in the summer required! Dave Thomas Captained the side, well supported by the following players: Aleks Stojanovic, John Williams, Gareth Hinton, Marshall Clayton & John Evans.

Meanwhile, our Juniors were relegated on the last game of the season but thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There is no doubt players like Richard Ackerley, Perry Shoemark, Jac Gowing & Emily Jones will all have benefited from playing at a higher level, with some achieving very good results during the season.

North West Counties League - Thursday Team – Having gained promotion last season the Team knew they had to play well to make any impact in Division 3. This they did and, until Christmas, were challenging again for promotion. Unfortunately, a couple of injuries at critical times combined with some rather shaky performances, meant the Team slipped out of promotion contention to eventually finish fifth in the league. However, this was still an excellent season and we now look forward to challenging for promotion next season, with some of our younger players moving up the order!

Our NWCSL Ladies Team found it tough going in the 1st Division but managed to escape relegation by one place.
This division is very competitive and without the strength in depth it was always going to be a difficult season. All credit to our Ladies, however, it still an achievement that the Team have secured their place in this highest division again next season.

Special thanks from the Club to all our Captains – Mark Davies, Rob Evans, Dave Thomas, Mike Povey and Sian Hughes - for their hard work throughout the season.

Any member wishing to be considered for Team Squash should make contact with the Secretary.

Dec 2010: End of Term Report ...

Ladies Team – Our team is finding life hard in the North West Counties First Division with only one win to their name this season. The gulf in standard between this and the second division is very wide and, for some of our players it is a step up too much. However, for the excellent experience it provides, hopefully we may be able to turn things around in the second half !

The NWCSL Thursday Team is enjoying its time in the Third Division after gaining promotion last season from Division Four. Prior to the last two games of the first half, we were top of the league but injuries and unavailability of players in those matches has seen the Club slip back to fourth position. Regardless, this is still quite an achievement with a small squad of players.

The North Wales League Teams have had a great first half with our First Team winning the First Division title, on the last match of the half.
Meanwhile, the Second Team having struggled to stave off relegation for most of the season, found their form with players winning their last 4 matches to remain quite comfortably in the division. They will, however, be facing stiff opposition in 2011 as our Juniors Team have won promotion to Division Two and will be keen to put one over against the 2nd team !
Mike Povey took over the reins as Captain from Paul Gowing this season and with some of the juniors showing the good form we knew they were capable of, they finished second in their league. It will be a big step up for the Juniors Team but one they will relish !

Congratulations to the following who played in our Juniors Team this year –
Richard Ackerley, Perry Shoemark, Jac Gowing, Emily Jones, Alice Jones, Aled Goddard, Joseph Newnes (all juniors) plus Mike Povey, Tommey Howell and Jim Tunley.

North West Counties League

Congratulations to our Thursday Team in the North West Counties Squash League who not only won their Division and gained promotion, but have gone on to become Division 4 Champions - this is a superb conclusion to an excellent season and well done to all players involved.
The Team moved successfully through a play-off situation for the opportunity to become North West Counties Division 4 Champions.

The Championship Final was played at Warrington Sports Club on Saturday, 8th May against Crow Wood Leisure from Burnley.

The match result was as follows:-
Rob Evans beat Paul Downes 3-2
Neil Rawlings beat Nick Uttley 3-0
Mark Davies beat Ian Thornber 3-0
Geraint Joines beat Andy Townsend 3-0
Gareth Williams beat Andy Quinn 3-2

Ready to play were our travelling reserves, John Evans and Hannah Davies - thanks to both of them.
This result was achieved, despite some injury concerns, against a very strong and good set of players from Crow Wood.

Congratulations also to Neil Rawlings on being awarded "NWCSL Player of the Season" in the Division 4 South West League.

Together with our Ladies gaining promotion, these are great results for our Club after just three years since we were first established. This is a very good standard of squash, due to much hard work by all concerned, well done and good luck in the higher divisions next season.

The Champions with their Trophy

North West Counties Ladies Team has also had a superb season, sweeping all aside to take the 2nd Division title.
Congratulations to all our ladies as they contemplate the daunting standard ahead of them in Division 1 next year !

First Half Report

North Wales League
Our First Team have had an excellent half reaching second place in Division 1 behind Prestatyn's Saints B.
This is a fine achievement considering the strength of the other teams in the Division and, hopefully, their good form will continue into 2010.
The addition of Neil Rawlings and Rob Evans, back from university, have boosted the stalwarts Darren Lee and Mark Davies & John Williams, who are all having a successful season. With young Hannah Davies playing as well, it does also help bring their average age down !

The Second Team has not been as successful - having started the season badly as a Team based at Buckley, who were about to give up in Division 2 before transferring to Wrexham Brymbo, where we had capacity of players who wanted to play team squash.
Unfortunately, due to their poor start, the team were initially relegated to Division 3 by one point. However, there was some Christmas cheer - because an extra team joined the League it meant that the Second Team were given a reprieve. We hope they will make the most of this and now go to strength in Division 2.

Our Junior Team in Division 3, again superbly managed by Paul Gowing, have had a steady season with at least 3 or 4 juniors playing in each match - gaining some great results and invaluable experience. Hopefully this will continue in the 2nd half.
The following juniors have all played – Perry Shoemark, Alice Jones, Joseph Newnes, Jack Gowing, Aled Goddard, Emily Jones and Richard Ackerley, who has played particularly well at No 1.

North West Counties League
The Thursday Team, which occasionally included Hannah Davies, have had an excellent first half of season losing only one match and topping Division 4 - they are extremely well placed to win this League, barring any major mishaps. The first half concluded with a great 5 – 0 win against Chester's LA Fitness, who had been the top team.

North West Counties Ladies Teams have had a mixed season with the Second Team having to drop out of the League due to injuries and lack of players at certain times. Hopefully there may be an opportunity to resurrect a Second Team next season.

The First Team, however, were lying in second place at Christmas to Liverpool Cricket Club but, as we go to press, they are now top of the Division 2 due to a walkover against Liverpool in the first match of the second half.
The Team, led by the evergreens Sian Hughes, Helen Massey, Rachael Cooper (not evergreen!), Margaret Meadowcroft, with contributions from youngsters Llinos Evans and Emily Jones are now looking forward to consolidating their position at the top and promotion. We wish them all the best.

Players are asked to note that Mark Davies will take responsibility for the Tuesday North Wales Division One side, Dave Thomas will Captain the Team in Division Two, while Paul Gowing will cover the Division Three Team.

In September 2009, the Club has agreed to help out a struggling team from Buckley to remain in the North Wales Leagues, they have now integrated within the Club playing as Wrexham Brymbo Seconds. We now have a First, Second and Juniors Team - one in each of the three Divisions.

For the Thursday evening Team in the North West Counties Squash League, Rob Evans will take responsibility for all organisation. Fixtures for 2009-10 are attached.

North West Counties Squash League - 2009-10 Fixtures

It is with much regret that the Club has had to withdraw our Ladies Second Team from the North West Counties Squash Leagues. This has been due to our inability to field five fit players each week and an acknowledgement that running a Second Team is currently an unsustainable position.

Fixtures for the Ladies Team may be viewed using the following link:

Match fees for the 2009-10 Season are increased to £4.00 per player per match. This is to cover refreshments at £25 per home match plus £15 court fees. The cost of refreshments will need to be paid direct to Mike (Steward in the Sports Club) and court fees can be given to either Kevin Jones (Club Treasurer) or Mark Davies.

North Wales Ladies Squash Challenge

Matches between Saints Club, Prestatyn and Wrexham Brymbo are proving to be both successful and enjoyable for all concerned.

The Ladies competed over a series of four matches between Wrexham Brymbo & Saints with our Prestatyn friends winning in the very last point of the very last match - with Emily Strickland beating Margaret Meadowcroft 15-14 in the 5th game - to take the series. We hope this will continue as an annual event with mant more players competing.

Team News

At the mid point of the season, congratulations to the Ladies 1st team, who are now joint top of NWCSL Division 2a - the 2nd team are in the same Division and also doing well.
It is great to see the blend of youth and experience in both teams, in particular how a number of our juniors are providing a real contribution to each side. Our juniors have all come through the Club's Junior Coaching Programme - these are Llinos Evans, Emily Jones & Alice Jones.

The mens team in the North West Counties Squash League are struggling at present, as injuries have taken their toll. It will require a huge effort over the next couple of months to avoid relegation.

Our two teams in the North Wales Leagues are doing well and thanks are due to Paul Gowing for looking after the youngsters as well as turning out to play occasionally, even though he suffered through various injuries (some say old age!).
