January 2009 Local players at the 2009 British Open The British Junior Open is the most prestigious and longest-established junior open on the world calendar and attracts in excess of 450 of the very best players from all corners of the world. There are four local girls competing - Llinos Evans, Hannah Davies, Emily Jones (all Wrexham Brymbo) and Tesni Evans (Prestatyn). From 2nd to 6th January, you can follow the progress of our local talent at the
December 2008 Swiss success finishes 2008 in style Wrexham starlet Hannah Davies confirmed her climb into the European elite by reaching the final of the girls U17s event at the Swiss Junior Open in Zurich on 5th December.
The 16 year-old Wrexham Brymbo Squash Club and Stars Academy member, who was recently ranked number 16 in Europe in her age group, more than justified her status with another impressive performance that carried her to the finals.
Hannah’s run of successes was halted when she lost 3-0 to her fellow Stars Academy team-mate, Tesni Evans.
Another Club member, Emily Jones, was part of the flourishing Stars Academy contingent that returned to North East Wales with two winners, five finalists and seven places in the quarter-finals.
November 2008 Inter County debut for John Congratulations to Junior Club member John Evans who made his senior Inter County debut at the end of November, for North Wales against Merseyside. Although John narrowly lost his match 3 – 2. he is certainly playing extremely well at the moment and is beating many of the more experienced players in the Club.
Local Girls excel in Belgium Three of our juniors competed with Squash Wales in the Belgium Open over the weekend 1-2 November. Hannah Davies finished 8th having had a real chance to beat the number 2 seed, Andrea Malinova (Slovakia) in the quarter final. If Hannah had made it through, she would have played fellow North Wales player and close friend, Tesni Evans from Prestatyn. Tesni went on to take the Belgium title, beating the number one seed from France, 12-10 in the fifth set.
This shows real strength in North Wales Junior Squash and our congratulations to both young ladies.
Llinos Evans and Emily Jones also made the trip to Belgium and performed very well against strong opposition - both will have gained valuable experience which will hold them in good stead for the future.
Area Performance Centre On 9 November, the Club hosted an Area Performance Centre with Coach Andrew Evans as well as the Brymbo Coaches. About 25 up and coming young players from Flintshire, Denbighshire and Wrexham took part in coaching sessions which helped to establish a benchmark for ability across the three local Centres
October 2008 British Junior Closed Tournament A rising star at the Club, Hannah Davies, has confirmed her ranking and that she is one of the most promising players in the country. Hannah is still aged 15 but came tenth in the British Girls Under 17 group at the recent British Closed Junior Championships held at Wimbledon.
Hannah is a good example of how supportive local coaching programmes can help young people achieve their goals, linking progress as a junior through the regional and national schemes. The coaching programmes are held at the Wrexham Brymbo Squash Club on a weekly basis and Hannah has complimented this by playing on a regular basis as part of the Club's senior teams in the North Wales and North West Counties Squash Leagues. This is a superb effort Hannah ... very well done.
Welsh Junior Closed Tournament Congratulations to our juniors on their fine performances in the Tournament at Saints Club, Prestatyn and Holywell Leisure Centre on 3 - 5 October. Results as follows:
North West Counties Ladies League Well done to AliceJones who made her debut representing the Club against Neston on 13th October. Alice is part of the Club's coaching programme and it is really good to such progress, with our juniors moving up in this competition.
