Marchwiel Deiniol Primary School - a second group

Following their successful visit to the Club with Year 4 pupils last September, we hosted a taster session for Year 5 pupils from the Deiniol Primary School on 17th March.

Our thanks for a super morning to coaches Johnny Jones and Margaret Meadowcroft, the Class Teacher, Miss Beynon, Headteacher, Mr Terry Walker and, of course, the young people for their part in this latest taster session, run as part of the Wrexham Schools Squash Programme.

The two-hour session comprised all of the twenty Year 5 pupils taking part in a range of skills and fitness fun exercises. As a follow-up, all will soon be invited back to the Club for a more squash specific session after which we hope that some will want to continue with coaching. Well done to everyone for a superb session.

Those taking part were Thomas Hewitt, Emily Jones, Perry Shoemark, Llinos Evans and Hannah Davies.

All our players did really well and congratulation to them on their weekend.

Boys Under 15 - Perry Shoemark 19th place
Girls Under 15 - Emily Jones 7th place

February 2010

An excellent weekend in ... Lille

Hannah Davies competed in the French Junior Open Squash Championships last weekend as part of a strong North Wales contingent and made it through to the Final of the Girls Under 17 event.

Over 4 days of intensive squash, the Welsh players achieved some great results. Hannah was Runner-up in the Girls U17 event, this following an epic semi-final battle with Katie Smith (England) which went all the way in the 5th game - 12 points to 10.

In the Final Hannah lost out to local French girl, Melissa Alves, but she was pleased with her work in a tournament which had a bigger and much stronger field than the Swiss Junior Open Tournament she won back in December last year.

Other notable Welsh achievements came in the Under 13 girls where Lowri Roberts and Elin Harlow met in the 3rd /4th playoff, with Lowri just coming out on top this time.
Alex Pendleton also made the semi finals and over half of the squad had top 15 finishes.
Another superb weekend for Welsh Squash.

Congratulations to Thomas and keep up the good work.

Youth Test Series

Hannah Davies travelled to Edinburgh over the weekend 16-17 January, as part of a Welsh Team playing in the Youth (Under 20/18) Test Series.
Played at Heriot-Watt University, the event was for players nearing the end of their junior but commencing the senior stage of their careers. Players were specifically chosen in the U18 and U20 age groups to compete against similarly aged players from Scotland and England.

Wales came third in the Under 20s group to Scotland, then England, while in the Under 18s series, Wales came second to England.
Hannah, playing for the Under 18s, had a great weekend winning all her matches and the full results are available via the following link -

Tough British Junior Open for local girls

Hannah Davies and Emily Jones played in Sheffield over the weekend 2nd - 6th January in the prestigious British Junior Open. This Tournament, effectively, is the World Championships of Junior Squash and was dominated in all categories by young Egyptian players. You can follow the link below to view the final results.

Our two local girls faired differently - Hannah did really well to finish the Girls Under 17 competition in 22nd place; while Emily lost her first round Girls Under 15 match in five sets but then had to leave the Tournament through injury.

British Junior Closed Championships

Our congrastulations to Hannah Davies who did so well in the National Squash Centre, Machester over the weekend 29th October to 1st November.
Hannah provided a glimpse of her great potential by achieving a top four place in the Girls Under 17 section of the British Junior Closed Championships. To reach the semi-finals of such a prestigious competition is superb and great reward for all of the hard work put in week after week.

October 2009

Our Juniors making the grade !

We are delighted to report the Club's coaching programmes have been rewarded by our Juniors achieving the following successes.

[1] From our younger players at the Club, some have been selected for the Under 11 North East Wales Squad. Here they will receive additional coaching at Deeside Leisure until March 2010, playing with Juniors from Flintshire and Denbighshire.

Wrexham Brymbo coaches Mark Davies & Margaret Meadowcroft have been asked to take the sessions.
The Wrexham Brymbo players involved are: - Tyler Hughes, Adam Cartwright, Owen Cartwright, Isobel Griffith, Natasha & Edan Jackson, Morgan Williams, Nia Johnson, Rebecca Thomas, Harley Steele, Owen Platt, Rebecca Parrish and Benji Parrish.

[2] Six players, Thomas Hewitt, Hannah Philpot, Luke Griffith, Morgan Williams, Harley Steele, Owen Platt and Benji Parrish (some of who have previously taken part in the Under 11 North East Wales Squad) have been selected to join the Under 11 North East Wales Talent Identification Squad to be held in the Saints Squash Club Prestatyn.
This higher level coaching is a reward for these players who have consistently worked very hard at their game and shown great improvement over the last year. We hope that this progress will continue through to the Area Performance Centre and Excellence Squads.

[3] The Area Performance Centre is a mixture of, generally, our older junior players. This squad is based on players from Denbighshire and Wrexham with sessions held in Prestatyn on Wednesday nights.
Wrexham Brymbo players involved are Alice Jones, Perry Shoemark, Oliver Green, Edward Avery, Aled Goddard, Thomas Hewitt and Joseph Newnes.

Congratulations and best wishes to all our junior players.

Juniors excel at Inter County matches

Over the weekend 10/11th October, Hannah Davies & Llinos Evans played for North Wales Inter Counties Under 19 Team against Cheshire and Lancashire, both winning their matches.
The other players involved were Tesni Evans, Ceri Clark (from Saints) Chelsea Thomas and Charlotte Edmundson (Towyn). The Team won overall and they now go forward to play in the quarter finals.

Over the same weekend, Emily Jones played for the North Wales Under 15 side against Cheshire, Lancashire, & Leicestershire. This Team were also overall winners of their series, with Emily winning one and losing two matches.
Other players involved were Elin Harlow & Beth Williams (from Le Sport), Maddison Khan (Bangor) and Lowri Roberts (Llanwrst). This success means they also progress to the quarter final matches, to be played in January 2010.

Wrexham Brymbo coaches Mark Davies & Margaret Meadowcroft were selected to coach the two successful teams over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Perry Shoemark played for the North Wales Under 15 Boy’s Team against Merseyside, Lancashire and Cumbria, playing in two of the matches and winning both. Other team members were Emyr Evans Alex Pendleton and George Thomas (from Saints).

Congratulations to all players - the Club is proud of your achievements.

Acceptable Behaviour ....

At the start of a new season, all are reminded of the Club's Acceptable Behaviouer Code for our Junior Members; this is particularly important when selected to represent our Club at Performance Centre or matches.

Thanks to all staff and parents involved with this latest taster session as part of the Wrexham Schools Squash Programme, particulary the young stars from the Deiniol Primary School.

A group of twenty youngsters, all Year 4 pupils at the School, were superb as they took part in a range of skills and fitness fun exercises. All have been invited back to the Club for a more specific squash session and we hope that some will want to continue with coaching.

June 2009

Developing Junior Squash

The Club has been heavily involved with Under 11 squads held in Deeside over the four week period in June, with players coming from Flintshire, Denbighshire and Wrexham.
Three coaches, Andrew Evans, Mark Davies and Margaret Meadowcroft organised these to check out in some detail the current cohort of up and coming players and talent spot those with potential and who would benefit from a move into the North Wales squads.
The final session involved a mini tournament, however, due to holidays and absence only Wrexham Brymbo players were involved - Adam Cartwright and Luke Griffith contested the final with Adam beating Luke for the first time !

April 2009

Superb Tournament win for Perry

Congratulations to Perry Shoemark who continues an excellent March & April not only representing North East Wales in the English Under 13 Boys Inter Counties Team, finishing a creditable 4th in the finals weekend in Northamptonshire, but in also claiming his first tournament victory.
Perry came thorugh in a tough five set match to win the Under 13s final of the Midtown Open Tornament, held at the Deeside Leisure Centre, beating his close rival George Thomas (from the Saints Club).
Perry is a rising star in the Club and played some real quality squash throughout the weekend, keeping it all together for the final game to take the title.
Well done and keep it going, Perry.

Follow the link to see Perry following his victory:Perry Shoemark

Our other juniors played well in the Midtown Open Tournament and congratulations are also sent to the following:
Hannah Davies who won the Young Girls event – with Llinos Evans 3rd. Well done to Thomas Hewitt who came 3rd in the Boys Under 11 event. To Joseph Newnes who came 3rd in the Boys Under 15 event, with Edward Avery and Oliver Green achieving 5th & 7th places respectively in that same event. Also to Emily Jones who was Runner-up in the Girls Under 15 event.
Well done to all of our juniors on their success.

March 2009

Friendly Match v. Llanfyllin.

The Wrexham Brymbo Juniors played host to a team from Llanfyllin on 29th March with Hannah Philpott, Jasmin Hughes, Joseph Newnes, Thomas Hewitt, Aled Goddard and Edward Avery representing our Club.
Llanfyllin are a new club and have a number of very keen juniors who wanted to test their squash prowness against a selected Wrexham Brymbo side. However, Llanfyllin they were no match for our juniors, who all played exceptionally well and recorded a resounding victory.
Young Hannah Philpott at age 8 made her debut and won two out of three matches against girls a lot older. The young people from both Clubs thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we hope that a return match will soon be on the cards.
Our thanks to Margaret from the Sports & Social Club for providing a buffet after which was greatly appreciated.

January 2009

Inter Counties Matches.

The Club had three representatives in the Girls Inter Counties matches over the weekend 24 / 25 January. Our thanks to Margaret Meadowcroft who travelled up to Newcastle with the North Wales Under 19 girls, however, due to an unfortunate late withdrawl by one of the girls the Team was always going have a tough time. Playing teams from Yorkshire & Northumbria, Hannah Davies and Llinos Evans both performed really well (considering Llinos was suffering with a back injury) with Hannah winning her two matches.

The same weekend, Mark Davies travelled to Barnsley with the North Wales Under 15 girls Team which includes Wrexham Brymbo's Emily Jones. The North Wales Team lost to Northumbria & Yorkshire but did well to beat Lancashire. Well done to Emily who played particulary well at No.1 in the Team against very strong opposition.

Home Internationals

Hannah Davies represented Wales in the Under 18 Home International test matches in Cardiff over the weekend 17 / 18 January and won 3 out of her 4 matches. In one match she beat the English No 5 Under 17 girl Lucy Townly in a very exciting 5 set match; a girl Hannah had not beaten before.

Local players at the 2009 British Open

The British Junior Open is the most prestigious and longest-established junior open on the world calendar and attracts up to 500 of the very best players from all over the world - it is considered to be the World Championships of Junior Squash.

Four local girls flew the North Wales flag at Sheffield over the weekend 2nd to 6th January - Llinos Evans, Hannah Davies, Emily Jones (all Wrexham Brymbo) and Tesni Evans (Prestatyn) and they did us proud.
Tesni finished in 11th position having had an excellent win against the current European No1 Cyrill Peltier (France) but eventually losing to the runner up in the event Nour El Torky (Egypt).
Hannah was unfortunate to be drawn against the No1 seed in her second round, Nour El Tayeb (Egypt), but put in a very creditable performance against an Under 17 girl who is already on the pro circuit. Nour confirmed her status as World No 1 winning the event without dropping a game.

Llinos Evans, also in the U17 girls, was in her first British Open and finished 28th. Llinos came up against the No 2 seed from USA early on, an extremely strong player who reached the semi final. Llinos continued to perform well in further matches.
Emily Jones in the U 15 girls finished 34th having met the Scottish No 1 in the first round but put in a creditable performance - an experience in such a quality event that will do no harm !

Well done to all our North Wales players.

December 2008

Swiss success finishes 2008 in style

Wrexham starlet Hannah Davies confirmed her climb into the European elite by reaching the final of the girls U17s event at the Swiss Junior Open in Zurich on 5th December.

The 16 year-old Wrexham Brymbo Squash Club and Stars Academy member, who was recently ranked number 16 in Europe in her age group, more than justified her status with another impressive performance that carried her to the finals.

Hannah’s run of successes was halted when she lost 3-0 to her fellow Stars Academy team-mate, Tesni Evans.

Another Club member, Emily Jones, was part of the flourishing Stars Academy contingent that returned to North East Wales with two winners, five finalists and seven places in the quarter-finals.

November 2008

Inter County debut for John

Congratulations to Junior Club member John Evans who made his senior Inter County debut at the end of November, for North Wales against Merseyside. Although John narrowly lost his match 3 – 2. he is certainly playing extremely well at the moment and is beating many of the more experienced players in the Club.

Local Girls excel in Belgium

Three of our juniors competed with Squash Wales in the Belgium Open over the weekend 1-2 November. Hannah Davies finished 8th having had a real chance to beat the number 2 seed, Andrea Malinova (Slovakia) in the quarter final. If Hannah had made it through, she would have played fellow North Wales player and close friend, Tesni Evans from Prestatyn. Tesni went on to take the Belgium title, beating the number one seed from France, 12-10 in the fifth set.

This shows real strength in North Wales Junior Squash and our congratulations to both young ladies.

Llinos Evans and Emily Jones also made the trip to Belgium and performed very well against strong opposition - both will have gained valuable experience which will hold them in good stead for the future.

Area Performance Centre

On 9 November, the Club hosted an Area Performance Centre with Coach Andrew Evans as well as the Brymbo Coaches. About 25 up and coming young players from Flintshire, Denbighshire and Wrexham took part in coaching sessions which helped to establish a benchmark for ability across the three local Centres

October 2008

British Junior Closed Tournament

A rising star at the Club, Hannah Davies, has confirmed her ranking and that she is one of the most promising players in the country. Hannah is still aged 15 but came tenth in the British Girls Under 17 group at the recent British Closed Junior Championships held at Wimbledon.

Hannah is a good example of how supportive local coaching programmes can help young people achieve their goals, linking progress as a junior through the regional and national schemes. The coaching programmes are held at the Wrexham Brymbo Squash Club on a weekly basis and Hannah has complimented this by playing on a regular basis as part of the Club's senior teams in the North Wales and North West Counties Squash Leagues. This is a superb effort Hannah ... very well done.

Welsh Junior Closed Tournament

Congratulations to our juniors on their fine performances in the Tournament at Saints Club, Prestatyn and Holywell Leisure Centre on 3 - 5 October. Results as follows:
Under 17 Girls - Hannah Davies 2nd and Llinos Evans 5th
Under 15 Girls - Emily Jones 6th
Under 13 Boys - Perry Shoemark 8th
Under 11 Boys - Thomas Hewitt 10th.

2008 Welsh Open

Wrexham Brymbo Squash Club junior Emily Jones has won the Welsh Open title with a stunning victory in the final of the girls under-13s in Cardiff - a major European Grand Prix ranking event.

Emily faced fierce opposition from over 230 top players from 16 different countries across the world, to carry off this prestigious crown and without dropping a game throughout the competition.

In the tough decider, Emily beat the Scotland number one Kirstie Lobban in straight games. Emily receives additional coaching as part of the North Wales Stars Academy and her victory was accompanied by fellow Stars Academy member Alex Pendleton who won the boys under-13s title.

Hannah Davies also from our Squash Club played tremedously well to get to the runner-up place in the final of the under-15s competition.
